The NT reference sequence database is initiated in 2025 in the frame of the NEMO-Tools project from work that had developed in the previous years in the Microbial Ecology Groups of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens and INALE Greece. Its aim is to provide reference databases for the Greek coastal waters of carefully annotated 18S rRNA, 16S rRNA, 12S rRNA and COI sequences using taxonomic fields from domain to species levels. At present, it contains over 8,000 sequences from bacteria, protists and fishes. It also contains sequences from metazoan, fungi and plants, as well a limited set of 16S sequences from plastids. The annotation of NT is performed by experts from each taxonomic group based on the amplicons from NCBI, PR2 and SILVA databases, and the operons are extracted from the eDNA sequencing datasets from Greek coastal sites.

Indicative taxonomic groups included:

  • Apicomplexa
  • Picozoa
  • Choropicophyceae, Picocystophyceae
  • Pseudoscourfieldiophyceae: new class for Pseudoscourfieldia and Pycnococcus
  • Archaeplastida
  • Dinophyceae
  • Haptista
  • Foraminifera
  • Fungi
  • Diatoms
  • Excavata
  • Metazoa – Non bilaterians
  • Proteobacteria
  • Bacteroidota
  • Cyanobacteria
  • Campylobacterota
