NEMO-Tools in brief
NEMO-Tools is a groundbreaking 2-year initiative, supported by the Hellenic Foundation for Research and Innovation.
Under the prism of the EU Biodiversity Strategy 2030, Europe aspires to achieve healthy and resilient ecosystems by 2030 for the benefit of people, climate and the planet. In response, NEMO-Tools, aims to be a catalyst for transformative change in marine ecosystem management, monitoring and conservation planning.
Utilizing diverse hard (ROVs, drones, Ground Unmanned Vehicle) and soft (eDNA, AI) technologies, this project will provide innovative data-driven measures of biodiversity and ecosystem change at different spatial and temporal scales. It aims to harness and combine state-of-the-art monitoring and computer technologies to develop a next-generation, integrated toolkit for observing, mapping, and monitoring marine ecosystems, ensuring these advances are fully realized for biodiversity assessment. Through its innovative approach and commitment to stakeholder engagement, including citizen science initiatives, NEMO-tools will inspire and influence societal actions, fostering a robust culture of sustainability and conservation.
NEMO-Tools’ outcomes will have broad applicability beyond the project’s lifetime, substantially assisting efforts to put Europe’s biodiversity on the path to recovery by 2030. It will provide scientists, managers, regulators, decision-makers, industries and the public with the means to better understand ecological processes, the drivers of change and biodiversity decline, assess the effectiveness of mitigation measures and strategies to recovery.
