Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, AUTh
The Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (AUTh) was founded by the Alexandros Papanastassiou government in 1925 and begun operations in 1926. AUTh is the largest university in Greece, encompassing all disciplines and recognized as a vibrant center of learning with a long tradition of academic achievement.
AUTh’s research policy focuses on promoting quality and encouraging excellence. The Aristotle University of Thessaloniki constitutes a comprehensive institution with Faculties and Schools serving a vast array of scientific fields, ranging from natural and technological to social and health sciences, arts and humanities. It serves approximately 88,283 students, including 77,198 undergraduates, 6,588 postgraduates, and 3,952 doctoral candidates. One of its schools, the School of Biology, was founded in 1973 following the division of the School of Natural Sciences into the School of Biology and the School of Geology. Its programs train students in diverse disciplines related to biology, including genetics, developmental and molecular biology, ecology, conservation biology, zoology, and botany. The education and training provided address the evolving needs of the biological sciences and modern society. The School of Biology offers high-quality education, utilizing state-of-the-art teaching methods and providing students with both theoretical and practical training directly related to their field of study.
University of Aegean, UAegean
The University of the Aegean (UAegean), (re)-founded in 1984, comprises a network of “academic ports of studies and research” across six Aegean islands: Mytilene (Lesvos), Chios (Chios), Karlovassi (Samos), Rhodes (Rhodes), Ermoupolis (Syros), and Myrina (Lemnos). It is the most geographically dispersed university in Greece.
UAegean is dedicated to high-level research and quality teaching, focusing on contemporary subjects that promote economic and social development, European cohesion, and cultural values. Foundation for Research and Technology – Hellas, FORTH
The Foundation for Research and Technology – Hellas (FORTH), founded in 1983, is one of Greece’s largest and most prestigious research centers, globally recognized for its top-level research. Based in Heraklion, Crete, and comprising ten Research Institutes, FORTH focuses on interdisciplinary research and development activities in sectors of significant scientific, societal, and economic interest. It prioritizes cultivating an environment that fosters learning, research, and innovation.
FORTH’s strategy centers on scientific quality and excellence to achieve three main goals: conducting high-value scientific and technological research in strategic areas, training the next generation of researchers in collaboration with Greek universities, and developing innovative products and services that benefit society and drive economic growth. Hellenic Agricultural Organization – DIMITRA, ELGO – DIMITRA
The Fisheries Research Institute (INALE), one of the 11 Institutes of the General Directorate of Agricultural Research of ELGO-DIMITRA, has been operating since 1993 in Nea Peramos, Kavala. INALE is the only institute in Greece dedicated to fisheries science, the aquatic environment (coastal, transitional and inland waters), fishery exploitation, and aquaculture.
The Institute’s specialized research and technical staff engage in numerous research projects and studies, offer consultancy on national fisheries and environmental policies, provide services to public and private entities, and significantly contribute to the education of graduate and postgraduate students, as well as to the training of fisheries and aquaculture professionals.


National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, NHUA
The National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (NKUA) was founded on April 14, 1837. It holds the distinction of being the first university in Greece, the Balkan Peninsula, and the Eastern Mediterranean region. NKUA comprises various Academic, Administrative, Financial, and Technical Units, providing extensive educational, research, and cultural services to the community.
NKUA is renowned for its research-intensive focus, where faculty, PhD candidates, and researchers consistently advance the frontiers of knowledge, earning high rankings, including 1st among Greek universities and 41st globally in Google Scholar Citations by Webometrics. With a student body of approximately 68,500 undergraduate and postgraduate students, over 2,100 academic staff, and around 1,000 administrative and specialized personnel, NKUA is committed to excellence in teaching and research across a wide array of disciplines.
