At NEMO-Tools, we are proud to support activities that bring science closer to society.
Through this initiative, Scouts of the Greek islands – Chios and Lesbos – explored the hidden soundscape of the sea, learning how marine organisms communicate and how human-made and natural sounds travel underwater and affect marine life.
Under the NEMO-Tools project, in collaboration with the team of experts of University of the Aegean, participants were introduced to underwater acoustics and to the work of marine scientists who study ocean ecosystems, often in remote and challenging environments.

As part of the NEMO-Tools activities, participants used low-cost hydrophones designed for easy underwater sound recording. By connecting these tools to a mobile phone or portable recorder, they were able to carry out their own measurements and actively contribute to marine research through citizen science.
NEMO-Tools provides innovative tools, protocols, and best practices in underwater acoustics, satellite remote sensing, environmental DNA sampling, and visual observations with underwater vehicles. Together with citizen science approaches, our goal is to support marine research and contribute to the restoration of Europe’s biodiversity by 2030.
