Exploring the Underwater Forests of Lesvos: ROV Surveys Reveal Beauty and Impact

Our ROV team, led by Prof. Stelios Katsanevakis, has launched an exciting new mission around Lesvos Island, focusing on the assessment of gorgonians and coralligenous assemblages. Two out of five scheduled data-collection trips have already been successfully completed, providing remarkable insights into this vibrant underwater world.

During our initial photographic sampling, we discovered thriving purple gorgonian forests in the coastal waters of Lesvos—truly breathtaking ecosystems that highlight the island’s marine biodiversity. These surveys, carried out as part of the Nemo-Tools project, continue to uncover both natural marvels and human impacts. Alongside the stunning marine life, our ROV has also documented ghost nets and abandoned longlines—a concerning reminder of how human activity disrupts even the most pristine environments.
