As part of the ongoing citizen science initiatives led by National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (NKUA) and Fisheries Research Institute (INALE), students in Kavala had the opportunity to engage in hands-on learning experiences focused on marine ecosystems and environmental conservation. These activities, which aim to bridge the gap between scientific research and public awareness, continue to empower young participants with knowledge and practical skills for understanding and protecting marine life.
On February 11, 2025, NEMO-Tools project team conducted school visits at the 13th Primary School of Kavala and the Primary School of Amisiana village, Kavala. These visits in Kavala mark a continuation of the citizen science initiative, which was previously implemented at the Arsakeio Summer School in Athens (June 17–21, 2024). These efforts are part of a broader strategy to engage schools and communities in scientific research, fostering a deeper connection between education and environmental action.
The program introduced students to key scientific concepts through presentations and laboratory activities, allowing them to explore marine biodiversity, understand human-induced environmental changes, and participate in research-oriented exercises. Building on the methodology previously implemented in Athens, the Kavala activities included:
- Observation of marine phytoplankton using simple sampling techniques.
- Measurement of seawater pH and temperature to understand environmental variations.
- Microplastic monitoring to highlight pollution impacts on marine ecosystems.
Through these hands-on sessions, students gained valuable insights into scientific methodologies while using accessible and frugal tools for data collection. By participating in these activities, they contributed to real-world environmental research and became more aware of the importance of marine conservation.
By extending these activities to more schools and regions, NEMO-Tools project aims to empower the next generation of marine conservationists, ensuring that young minds actively contribute to scientific research and environmental awareness. Stay tuned for more updates on upcoming activities!
